Behavior Management
Bucket Fillers: I believe in positive reinforcement and I hope to develop a positive classroom community. To do this I use the Bucket Filler System. This is a behavior philosophy that encourages positive behavior. During the first week of school we will read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? which will introduce the concepts to students. The book explains that a ”bucket filler" is someone who does positive, kind, and helpful things to make others feel good and a "bucket dipper" is someone who does the opposite. When a child is caught being a "bucket filler" they will receive a “Bucket Filler” slip in their personal bucket (bag); students can earn a “Bucket Filler” slip for positive behaviors. Students can also catch each other being bucket fillers and can fill out a “Bucket Filler” slip explaining how their classmate was a bucket filler. I feel that it is important for the children to know that they can praise each other for good behavior as well. This helps to create a positive and comfortable classroom community. Students can trade their “Bucket Filler” slips in for classroom rewards.
Clip Chart: I will also be using the Clip Chart classroom management program. You will see your child’s clip color colored on his/her homework sheet. They will move their clip up or down for positive (up) and negative (down) behaviors during the day as well. Positive behaviors include: On task, Prepared, Being Helpful, etc. and negative behaviors include: Talking out of turn, No homework, Off task, etc. After reaching a certain dollar amount, in 10 dollar increments of $10.00, $20.00, $30.00, and $40.00, students can choose who they would like to spend their money toward individual and/or class rewards and privileges. This program is a wonderful motivator.
Each day, every student will start their clip on Green which is “Ready to Learn”. At the end of the day they can earn money. If they end on green, they will earn $1.00. If they are doing a good job, they move up one to orange which is “Wise Choices” and they will earn $2.00. If they are being a wonderful role model and doing a fabulous job they can move up to purple which is “Superstar” and earn $3.00. If a student is having a difficult choice making good choice, they will move one down from green which is yellow and is “Think About it.” If the behavior doesn’t improve and they have to move down again, it goes to blue “Teacher’s Choice” and the bottom is red “Parent Contact.” I really want to focus on the positive, so students do not lose money if they end up below green.
